What Is SR-22 Insurance in California and Who Needs It?

SR-22 in California is a certificate of financial responsibility—not a policy type. Learn who needs it, how filing works, and what to expect on premiums.

SR-22 is a form, not a separate policy

In California, an SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files with the DMV to prove you carry the state’s required liability insurance. People often say they need “SR-22 insurance,” but the SR-22 itself is paperwork attached to an auto policy that meets state minimums (or other requirements ordered by the court).

You still buy a standard auto policy (or non-owner liability in some cases). The carrier notifies the DMV electronically when coverage starts, renews, or cancels. If coverage lapses, the DMV is notified again—which can mean another suspension if you are still under an SR-22 requirement.

Who typically needs an SR-22 in California?

Common reasons include a DUI or serious traffic violation, being involved in an accident without insurance, too many points on your record, or a license reinstatement after certain suspensions. A judge or the DMV will tell you how long you must maintain the filing—often three years, but it varies.

Not everyone with a ticket needs an SR-22. If you are unsure, check your DMV paperwork or ask a licensed agent to read your notice with you. Guessing wrong can cost you extra trips to the DMV or another lapse in compliance.

Non-owner SR-22 when you do not have a car

If you need to satisfy an SR-22 requirement but you do not own a vehicle, a non-owner liability policy may be an option. It covers you when you drive vehicles you do not own (with exclusions—rentals and work vehicles are special cases). An agent can tell you if it fits your situation.

Premiums and shopping carriers

An SR-22 filing usually comes with higher premiums because the underlying risk factors that triggered the requirement are serious in the eyes of insurers. That does not mean you should accept the first number you hear. Independent agencies compare multiple carriers so you can still find a realistic rate for legal compliance.

Be honest about your record when you quote. Underwriting will verify details; mismatched information slows everything down and can void a quote.
